UFC 266 is not to be missed when it takes place on Sunday, September 26 with two titles on the line. Headlining UFC 266 is a Featherweight Championship bout with Aussie Alexander Volkanovski defending the title against former title challenger Brian Ortega. In the co-headliner, current women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko will defend the title against Lauren Murphy.
Volkanovski and Ortega were originally scheduled to fight at UFC 260 in March 2021, but this was cancelled due to Volkanovski testing positive for COVID-19. After defeating Max Holloway in December 2019 and claiming the featherweight title, Volkanovski defended it when the pair met again for a rematch. Defeating Vokanovski won’t be an easy feat for Ortega with Vokanovksi currently riding a winning streak of nineteen fights. Despite losing to Holloway in 2018, Ortega has significantly improved, especially with an outstanding win over Chan Sung Jung.
In the women’s flyweight division, Shevchenko is one of the greatest champions in UFC history having defended the title five times with losses only against Amanda Nunes. This will be Murphy’s first shot for a title after achieving a five-fight winning streak.
Also in UFC’s main card is a reunion between Nick Diaz and Robbie Lawler in a welterweight bout. The two fighters first took on each other seventeen years ago at UFC 47 with Lawler being the more active fighter over the past few years. Rounding out UFC 266’s main card is a heavyweight bout between Curtis Blaydes and Jairzinho Rozenstruik and a women’s flyweight bout between Jéssica Andrade and Cynthia Calvillo.
